Toledo Bend Lunker Bass Program ends May 19; Program setting new record

An all-time record number of lunker bass weighing 10 pounds or greater has already been set on the Nation’s Number One B.A.S.S. fishing lake during the 2015-2016 Toledo Bend Lunker Bass Program . . . and it isn’t over yet! The 2015-2016 Program year runs from Sunday, May 15, 2015, through Thursday May 19, 2016.

On Sunday, March 6, 2016, the number of lunkers caught and registered reached 87—an all-time high—and 6 lunkers higher than last year’s record of 81 lunkers! This number is expected to go even higher by the end of this lunker year as it is 56 lunkers more than it was at this time in 2015.

The Toledo Bend Lake Association (TBLA) sponsors this conservation catch-and-release program by awarding a free replica to anglers who register their live bass at one of the approved weigh stations so that the fish can be released live back into Toledo Bend Lake.

Dinah Medine, Coordinator of the Lake Association’s Toledo Bend Lunker Bass Program, will award replicas to anglers at the Sealy Big Bass Splash at Cypress Bend Park on Sunday May 22, 2016.

Among the fish caught so far, 57 were in the 10-lb. class (weighing between 10.00 and 10.99 lbs.)—3 of which were tagged fish; 19 were in the 11-lb. class—4 of which were tagged fish; 8 meet the 12-lb. class—1 of which was a tagged fish; 1 was in the 13-lb. class; and the largest fish weighed in at 14.16 lbs.

One fisherman has caught and registered two lunkers this year while another has caught and registered three lunkers. You can see photos of the big fish by going to the Toledo Bend Lunker Bass Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Toledo-Bend-Lunker-Bass-Program) or see a complete list on the Toledo Bend Lake Association’s Website at www.toledobendlakeassociation.com.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Aug. 13)

FAIR. 94 degrees; 2.23 feet below pool. Hot summer conditions have made fishing tough, with the early morning topwater bite showing slight improvement-producing a few fish in the 4 pound range on Yellow Magic, Pop-R, and Spooks-but lasting only 30-45 minutes. With no morning cloud cover, the bite shuts down quickly once the sun clears the trees. Main lake ridge fishing has been fair, improving in the afternoon, with Texas rigs and big crankbaits working best in 15-20 feet of water during the last hour of daylight until dark. Crappie fishing remains very slow, with no solid reports this week. Report by Stephen Johnston, Johnston Fishing.
